Rough Guide to Admissions
The Rough Guide to Admissions outlines the application process at Trinity Hall on a single page.
We have a podcast called ‘Cambridge From the Inside‘. You may find the following episodes helpful:
My Cambridge Application
Shortly after submitting your UCAS application, you’ll be asked via email to complete a further online form called My Cambridge Application. To make a valid application to the University of Cambridge, you must submit My Cambridge Application by the required deadline, which is 6pm (UK time) on 22 October.
We have recorded a podcast called ‘My Cambridge Application Explained’ which you may find helpful.
Declaring Qualifications
Please note that it is compulsory to declare ALL achieved qualifications at the point of application. This includes, for example:
- results for public exams in all subjects that you have studied at school, whether compulsory or optional
- results for public exams in all subjects that you have self-studied
- all STEP Mathematics results, regardless of which course you are applying for
- results for English language tests (e.g. IELTS)
- all previous results in subjects where you have retaken exams or entered for multiple sittings
- all previous results, even if they are lower than expected
- the date each module was taken (for modular qualifications such as Pearson International A Levels)
Failure to declare a qualification or examination sitting is a breach of the agreement you made when submitting your My Cambridge Application, and also a breach of our Terms of Admission. You must tell us when you are planning to sit exams for each of qualifications, including each sitting where relevant.
We understand this process may be different from anything you’ve done before, and that we’re asking for a lot of detail. At this stage, please check your application to make sure that you have entered all your qualifications correctly. If you need to add or correct anything, please complete this UCAS form and inform us of your corrections. You have until Wednesday 5 November to make any corrections without it affecting your application adversely.
If the information provided by you in relation to your qualifications is later found to be incomplete or inaccurate, your application will be withdrawn and any offer will be cancelled.
Olympiads and other competitions – whilst this is not an essential requirement, it is nevertheless extremely helpful for us to have information about performance in competitions of this kind. You can let us know about these by mentioning it in your personal statement, via email to the Admissions Office, or by completing the UCAS form above.
Extenuating Circumstances
It’s important that you let us know about any extenuating circumstances that impacted your studies in the last 2-3 years so that we can take them into account when we assess your application. Most extenuating circumstances should be declared by your teacher in your UCAS reference so check with your referee that they have done this.
A range of admissions staff will view information given in your UCAS reference. For particularly sensitive or personal issues, it may be appropriate for your teacher or other professional to let us know about these separately.
Submission of Written Work
The following subjects require samples of written work to be submitted as part of the application process:
- Anglo Saxon, Norse & Celtic
- Archaeology
- Architecture (portfolio) – see below
- Asian & Middle Eastern Studies (only if you have chosen a European language)
- Classics
- English
- History
- History & Modern Languages
- History & Politics
- Human, Social & Political Sciences
- Land Economy
- Modern & Medieval Languages
- Music
- Theology, Religion, and Philosophy of Religion
Please read the Submission of Written Work guide to see if this applies to your course, and follow the instructions given. Please remember to include the Cover Sheet with each essay. Written work must be sent to Trinity Hall Admissions Office by Wednesday 5 November using the online Admissions Documents Upload form.
Submission of Portfolio (Architecture Applicants)
Architecture applicants: you must submit a PDF (6 A4 pages, and less than 15MB in size) of your own artwork prior to interview. The selection of images should, in part, reflect material you might bring to interview as part of your portfolio. Please read the Submission of Written Work guide for further instructions (and note that in this case you do NOT need to include a cover sheet).
Your portfolio must be sent to Trinity Hall Admissions Office by Wednesday 5 November using the online Admissions Documents Upload form.
Adjustments for Disability, Neurodiverse Condition, etc
We want every applicant to have the chance to show their full potential. If you have a disability, neurodiverse condition, mental health condition, or long-term health condition, we can provide support during your interview and assessment. Telling us in advance will help us make sure everything goes smoothly on the day.
If you want to ask for an adjustment, you must fill in the Adjustments at Interview Form and upload it with supporting evidence via the online Admissions Documents Upload form by Wednesday 5 November. We can only make adjustments where supporting evidence (as outlined in the form) has been provided. Forms received after this date may mean we cannot make the necessary arrangements. If no form is received, we will assume that you don’t require any adjustments for your interview and none will be put in place.
If you declared a disability on UCAS but do not need any adjustments for your interview, please select the ‘No adjustments needed’ box and send the form back to us.
If you’re not sure whether or not you need to complete the Adjustments at Interview Form, you can use this flow chart to help you decide.
If you have any questions, or need this form in an alternative format, please email the Admissions Office.
Further Information
We support applicants with a wide range of conditions. While this is not an exhaustive list, examples include:
- Disabilities such as visual, hearing or speech impairments, mobility difficulties or chronic pain.
- Neurodiverse conditions include autism, ADHD, dyscalculia, dyslexia, dyspraxia and developmental co-ordination disorder.
- Mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression or OCD.

You can ask for a range of adjustments during the interview and assessment, such as:

- rest breaks
- large print or alternative formats

- communication support/preferred communication style
Asking us for an adjustment will not disadvantage your application in any way. Any details you share will be treated with confidence and only seen by staff supporting you during your interview and written assessment. Providing this information is entirely optional, but if you do not tell us about any required adjustments by the deadline we set, we cannot retrospectively take such requests into account following your interview.
Applicant Survey
We would like to gather some information about how applicants find out about Trinity Hall. This will help us to develop our future outreach work, such as open days, web content, podcasts, etc.
If you have applied directly to Trinity Hall this year, please complete this short, anonymous online survey. This will not be connected in any way to your application.
College-Registered Assessments
Applicants for the following courses are required to take a written assessment if shortlisted for interview. These will be held separately and in advance of the interviews (apart from Classics, where the assessment happens at interview). They will be conducted remotely. You will not need to register for these assessments in advance, as we will make all the arrangements for you. Pre-Interview Reading
Some subjects require applicants to read something in advance of the interviews. If you are required to do pre-interview reading, your interview invitation will say so.
Post-Interview Decisions
All decisions will be communicated via UCAS on Wednesday 28 January.
In a very small minority of cases, where a College wishes to call an applicant for a Winter Pool interview, these applicants may be contacted earlier (from 15 January onwards) to make interview arrangements. Contact will be made by email and/or by telephone.
