Guide to dress codes
As a Cambridge student, you may need to adhere to a dress code for certain events such as Formal Hall and Graduation. Dress codes may be with or without a gown. Here is your guide to the most common dress codes for formal occasions.
Events
Formal Hall
All students and guests are expected to dress smartly. This may include, for example, suit with shirt or blouse, long trousers with shirt or blouse, jumpsuit, dress, skirt with shirt or blouse, or national dress. Jeans, training shoes, beach footwear, and/or hats or caps, are not permitted. Jackets/gowns must be kept on during the Formal Hall. Members should ensure their guests are aware of, and comply with, the dress code.
Graduation
Dressing for graduation consists of the following components:
- formal dress according to one of two dress code options (outlined below), and
- academical dress, according to your degree
The Cambridge Students webpage provides accurate, up-to-date guidance on what to wear and where you can buy or rent appropriate academical dress. Please check very carefully that you conform to the dress code.
