The Prize has been created to encourage aspiring journalists, and recognise the importance of journalism in holding power to account and supporting a free, civil society.
Each year for the next five years, prizes will be awarded to outstanding student journalists in the categories of News and Features. Details will be announced in the autumn when the 2024/5 competition opens.
Mary Hockaday, Master of Trinity Hall, said: “As a former journalist myself, I am thrilled that Trinity Hall is able to support the best of Cambridge student journalism, thanks to a generous donation from Jim Passamano.
“Cambridge student journalism is very vibrant and we hope this prize will further encourage aspiring journalists to go on to play their part in reporting the news, holding power to account and getting behind the headlines with features which help us better know ourselves. Good journalism shines the light that all citizens need.”
Jim Passamano, Trinity Hall Law alumnus, and Beth Sufian are supporting the Prize. Jim said:
“Beth and I are delighted to support a student journalism prize to develop skilled journalists and a well-informed public. Students who learn the indispensable role of critically thinking journalists will contribute much to the preservation of our free societies.”
