Based on recent research into c. 11,000 investors who financed Britain’s contribution to the transatlantic traffic in enslaved African people, this talk will survey the various connections these investors facilitate between the traffic and various aspects of British development.

Professor William Pettigrew

William Pettigrew is an historian of the British involvement with transatlantic traffic in enslaved African people and Professor of History at the University of Lancaster. He is the author of Global Trade and the Shaping of English Freedom (Oxford University Press, 2023).
