Early Career Fellowship in International Law (fixed-term)

Role summary

Applications are invited for a fixed-term Cathy and Eli Lauterpacht Early Career Fellow in International Law, based at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, in collaboration with the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law. This appointment is for a period of three years. 

This Fellowship offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to undergraduate teaching in Law at the University of Cambridge while pursuing an independent research project of international standing within the field of International Law. 

The teaching component involves delivering undergraduate supervisions for Trinity Hall students, amounting to approximately 4–6 hours per week during term. The College currently has particular teaching needs in European Law and Human Rights Law. 

The postholder will be nominated for a Staff Fellowship at Trinity Hall, subject to approval by the relevant College bodies. They will be expected to contribute to College governance, including attendance at Governing Body meetings, and to undertake related academic duties as requested by the Senior Tutor. 

Fellows’ privileges include generous dining rights, the possibility of limited financial support for expenses associated with their research, and, if required and if available, free residential accommodation in the College. 

The successful candidate will also become a Fellow of the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law, one of the specialist centres within the Faculty of Law at the University of Cambridge. Desk space at the Lauterpacht Centre will be provided to the successful candidate. 

Applicants should normally hold a doctorate in a relevant field and be within 5 years of the awarding of their PhD by the start of the appointment.  They should demonstrate outstanding ability in both research and teaching through an excellent record of publications relative to their career stage and evidence of effective undergraduate teaching.

About the College

Trinity Hall is one of the oldest colleges in Cambridge, founded in 1350, and is centrally situated within Cambridge, next to the river. The College has a long tradition of academic excellence, being founded by Bishop Bateman for the study of civil and canon law. The College has around 350 undergraduates and 250 postgraduates, with a Fellowship of around 65 representing a large and diverse range of academic interests.  

The Law community is especially strong at Trinty Hall, with 5 Fellows covering a range of areas, from information, corporate and criminal law to international dispute resolution. The College admits 7-8 undergraduate students in Law each year, along with a number of students studying for LLM and other postgraduate degrees.  The successful candidate will be nominated for a Staff Fellowship at Trinity Hall. 

About the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law

Founded by Professor Sir Elihu Lauterpacht KC in 1983, the Lauterpacht Centre provides a forum for the discussion and development of international law and hosts a number of research projects. It is one of the specialist Centres of the Faculty of Law, and based in Cranmer Road, Cambridge, UK. 

The Centre aims to provide a framework and forum for critical and constructive thought about the function, content and working of law in the international community, as well as to develop an appreciation of international law as an applied body of rules and principles. A number of individuals associated with the Centre are actively involved in the practical development and application of international law. 

The Centre provides regular lectures and events on topical and pressing issues of international law by leading academics and practitioners as well as providing a base for Fellows’ research projects.
