How house plants can support wellbeing

As well as their visual beauty, house plants can have a positive impact on our mental health.
Caring for a plant to ensure it remains healthy can provide a focus and create new tasks to incorporate into your weekly routine.
Checking the soil regularly, then watering and feeding when needed is a great practice to get into.
Creating new habits such as cleaning the leaves of dust and debris is therapeutic and important for the plant’s health. Whilst concentrating attention on these tasks, it distracts and takes focus away from daily stresses.
This time also gives a break from the screens that we find ourselves spending more time with. It allows time to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature.
Watching your plants grow and knowing that you have played a part in that plant’s ability to thrive, can boost self-esteem, confidence and make us feel good. Losing yourself for a moment when caring for your plant reduces stress levels and leads to calmer moods.
The presence of a plant in your room can also encourage you to open the curtains and let some fresh air in, which is great for both your physical and mental wellbeing!
If you’re looking for other ways to enjoy some fresh air, why not join the Early Bird Gardening initiative at Wychfield to spend time in the gardens learning from our expert gardeners. With sessions every Wednesday from 8am to 8.30am, you can join the College community to help out with garden maintenance and enjoy 30-minutes of outdoor activity to start your day off on the right foot.
