The Economics course provides a sound understanding of core, pure and applied economics. While you study economics in considerable depth in this specialised degree, you employ ideas and techniques from many other disciplines including mathematics, statistics, history, sociology and politics. Therefore, our graduates are extremely well qualified for a wide range of jobs and further courses.

Course Overview

Our course provides a sound understanding of core, pure and applied economics.

You study economics in considerable depth, while also using ideas and techniques from many other disciplines including:

  • mathematics
  • statistics
  • history
  • sociology
  • politics

In the first year, you take five compulsory papers. In the second year, you take three compulsory papers and one optional paper. In the third year, you take two compulsory papers, two optional papers and write a compulsory dissertation of 7,500 words.

How You Learn

Teaching is provided through lectures, classes and supervisions. You can expect between 10 and 15 lectures each week in the first year.

Assessment is through formal written examinations that take place at the end of each year, and the compulsory dissertation in the third year. Typically, you have one three-hour exam for each paper covered each year.

In your first year:

  • British Economic History paper is assessed through an exam paper and a project.

In your second year:

  • Econometrics paper is assessed through a project
  • History and Philosophy of Economics paper is assessed through essay work

Entry Requirements

Minimum Offer Level

A-Level: A*A*A

IB Diploma: 41-42 points, with 776 at Higher Level

Subject Requirements

For Economics at Trinity Hall, you will need A levels/IB Higher Levels (or the equivalent) in:

  • Mathematics
  • An essay-based subject

If you’re studying IB, we ask for Analysis and Approaches for this course.

We will usually require you to achieve an A*/7 in Mathematics and/or Further Mathematics.

Admissions Process

Written Work

None required.

Admissions Assessment

All applicants for Economics for 2025 entry are required to take the Test of Mathematics for University Admission (TMUA) at an authorised assessment centre. You must register in advance for this test.
