Student Profiles – Wes, Modern and Medieval Languages
Wes is a second year MML student from the West Midlands and studied Spanish, French and Geography at A Level.
Why did you choose Trinity Hall?
I chose Trinity Hall because of its friendly and warm atmosphere. It’s not too big which is nice, and it’s right in the centre and by the river- the setting is idyllic.
How did you prepare for the application process and interviews?
What really helped me was rereading my personal statement and thinking of potential questions that could arise from it (some of these actually came up). The interviewers ultimately want to see your passion, so research things within the course that interest you. Due to the scope of MML, these interests can range from Italian gastronomy to Brazilian cinema!
Why did you choose your course? How does your course compare to your expectations?
I love that you don’t just study language and literature, but you also get the opportunity to study cinema, linguistics, philosophy, art, history, and the list goes on. Also, the year abroad is such a special & formative experience which I am really looking forward to. There’s way more breadth than I thought, especially from second year. You can pick up new languages in 2nd and 4th year- I am doing Catalan this year which I’m really enjoying. I’m also doing a paper where I carry out research on a topic of my choice and make a short video about it, which is nice since it’s one less written exam.
How are you taught?
Each language will have 1-2 grammar classes a week, 1 oral supervision per week and fortnightly translation classes. The culture part is a mix of lectures and supervisions. Usually, one supervision per fortnight for each culture paper.
How do you manage your workload?
Schedule time off just as you would your time ‘on’. This looks different for everyone. For me, I love running and spending time with friends.
If you still have questions about studying at Trinity Hall, please go to the Access and Outreach page, to see the current support schemes we are offering prospective applicants and to contact the Access and Recruitment Officer.
Additionally, we are relaunching Talk to a Student, where you can apply via this form to organise a 30-minute Zoom call with a current student, who can answer any specific questions you have that are not already answered on the website or via correspondence with the Admissions team.
