Studentship FAQs
How many Studentships are awarded each year?
The number and the value of awards varies from year to year and is dependent on many factors, including the number and quality of applicants and the duration and value of awards from previous years. All subjects are included and studentships are awarded on the merit of the application and qualifications of the applicant. The Trinity Hall Review for the preceding years publishes details of previous year’s Studentship awards.
When should I apply?
Our main advice is to apply as early as possible and by your course funding deadline. Only postgraduate offer-holders accepted for Trinity Hall college membership by 9 March 2026 will be considered for awards entirely funded by the College. Therefore to increase your chances of college membership by this date, please apply for your course as early as possible. You do not need to select Trinity Hall as your first choice college, but doing so will ensure that your application comes to us first. Your application will not reach us if you are offered membership by another college.
Do I need to send additional references or further information?
No. All necessary information, including references, transcripts and research proposals, will be provided as part of your University application.
What if I'm not eligible for any of the 'Specific Studentships'?
All students accepted for College membership by 9 March 2026 will automatically be considered for the general awards, which are open to postgraduate students in all subjects.
What if I get accepted by another College?
You make your college choices on your University application and you will be considered by each college in order of preference. If you are accepted by another college, Trinity Hall will not receive your application so you will not be considered for the general or subject-specific awards. However, if applicable, you may be considered for partnered studentships but you must be willing to transfer to Trinity Hall.
When will I hear the outcome?
Applications will be considered by the College’s Studentship Committee after the 9 March 2026 deadline. Successful applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application between April and June. If you do not receive a funding offer during this period, please assume you have been unsuccessful on this occasion.
What if I receive funding from another source?
If you are offered a Trinity Hall studentship please notify the College of any other funding offers. The College may reduce the value of your Studentship by the amount you have been awarded by any other funding source, if it exceeds your total fee and maintenance costs as set down in university guidelines. For example if Trinity Hall offers you a fully funded Studentship of £40,000 and you gain funding from another source of £10,000 your Trinity Hall studentship would be reduced by £10,000.
How do I fund my fourth year?
PhD funding is for three and a half years unless otherwise stated and it is expected that you will complete within that period.
