From netball to yoga and climbing to ice skating, Trinity Hall has an abundance of sport societies that students can get involved with. Helping you to find your club are our College JCR Sports Officers and long-standing Cambridge University Varsity players, Deniz Ozer (left) and Viktoria Hunter (right).
Deniz is a Human, Social, and Political Sciences (HSPS) student in his third year and during the week, you’ll most likely find him on the football pitch as the Captain of the Cambridge University men’s Varsity football team this year, as well as playing football for Trinity Hall. Viktoria is also in her third year, studying History, and is typically armed with a foil as a fencer on the women’s Varsity team. Both began their respective sports at young ages and are now your first points of contact for all things sport during your time at Trinity Hall.
Speaking to them after their appointment to their new positions, Deniz and Viktoria told us about what their role entails and what you can look forward to this year, on and off the pitch.
What does the role of Sports Officer entail?
As described by Viktoria, the Sport Officer position was created as a “unifier” to help as many students as possible get involved in College and University sports.
“I think a lot of people are unaware that College sports societies even exist”, says Viktoria. “Some of them are hard to track down and if you’re a beginner and you’ve never been introduced to it, it can be quite nerve-wracking to ask a club leader, ‘How do I join in?’”
Deniz and Viktoria are your first port of call for all things sports-related at Trinity Hall. Whether you’re looking to join a University or College team, explore opportunities for casual sporting events, or get the details on upcoming Trinity Hall matches (go team!), they’re here to help. From bridging the gap between College and University-level sports to making sure the process of getting involved is simple and accessible for everyone, they’re dedicated to supporting your sports journey every step of the way.
Deniz says, “We want to encourage sport casually throughout the College and provide pathways for people to be generally active on their own terms. For our first event, we’ve introduced the Wychfield Sports Day Out which will be held on 12 October at Wychfield’s Sports Grounds from 2pm till 6pm. We’re excited to see College members join us on the day and take part in the activities.”
Why is sport so important at College?
Deniz and Viktoria are both strong believers in the mental and physical benefits that come from playing sports and how these benefits transfer both to their academic skills and social life at College. Sport has taught them a lot about mental strength, resilience, teamwork and much more, and they’re keen to encourage students to make the most of these benefits.
Deniz said, “Sport teaches you to have quite high standards of hard work, and I think I really transferred that into my studies, especially when I was younger. It helps structure your work in a way because you know you’ve got, for example, two hours to do some work before training, so you will get it done. Sport also keeps you focused and it’s good for your overall wellbeing, especially when you’re revising.”
Viktoria added, “I wouldn’t have been introduced to some of my closest friends without sports, as many of them are from the [fencing] club. It’s nice to be introduced to people from different colleges outside of Trinity Hall and outside of your year.”
Summarising their objectives for the upcoming year, the new Sports Officers are looking to “get people active” and “encourage, engage and fuel enjoyment” for sports activities during their time in post.
If you’re looking to get involved with sports this year, make sure to turn up to the Trinity Hall Sports and Societies Fair on 6 October, on Latham Lawn (or the Graham Storey Room depending on the weather) from 10am till 12noon. Whether you’ve never picked up a sport in your life or are a World Champion athlete (and we just don’t know it yet), there will be plenty of sports opportunities for you to get involved with.
And don’t forget – the Trinity Hall Sports Officers have an Instagram account dedicated to College sport. Check out the Trinity Hall Sport Instagram to find out how you can join in with their initiatives and keep up to date with the College’s sporting community.
