Michael Perrott

We are sorry to announce that Michael Perrott has passed away. The following obituary is courtesy of his family

Michael was born on the 17th of March, 1933, a date that fittingly gave him his name, Patrick, among them. His early years took him across England, Egypt, and Ireland, giving him a breadth of experience and perspective that would quietly shape the man he became.

At just 13 years old, Michael began boarding at Wellington in 1946. Those five years were deeply formative. He found not only education, but belonging — and as a strong and energetic young man, he thrived in sport and in community. It was there that many of the qualities we remember today were strengthened: discipline, resilience, and a quiet confidence.

From Wellington, Michael went on to Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he studied English and theology. These were not simply academic pursuits for him — they reflected a lifelong interest in people, relationships, and faith. He left Cambridge in 1954, ready to begin the next chapter of his life.

And what a chapter that was.

On the 6th of April, 1955, Michael married Hilary Hewson. Their marriage lasted for 66 years — a remarkable testament to commitment, partnership, and love. He is survived by his three sons, five grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren — a living legacy of generations shaped by his care, wisdom, and example.

In 1968, Michael took on a significant role as Assistant Secretary of the City of Belfast YMCA. This was more than a job — it was a calling. He became instrumental in its development and expansion, helping to build something that would serve countless lives. His work there reflected his deep belief in supporting people, particularly young people, in finding direction, dignity, and hope.

Even after leaving the YMCA in 1992, Michael did not slow down. Instead, he began a new venture — founding a Christian counselling organisation, Christian Guidelines. That work continues today, a lasting testament to his vision and compassion. Through this, and through his writing on marriage and parenting, Michael extended his influence far beyond his immediate circle, offering guidance and encouragement to many.

Michael’s life was one of service — to his family, his community, and his faith. He was a man who built things that lasted: relationships, institutions, and wisdom passed down through words and example.

He died on the 1st of April, 2026, at the age of 93. While we feel the weight of that loss, we also recognise the fullness of his years and the richness of his life.

Those who knew Michael will remember not just what he did, but who he was — steady, thoughtful, committed, and kind. A man who gave of himself generously and quietly, without seeking recognition.

Michael Patrick Perrott — deeply loved, greatly respected, and never forgotten.
