It is with great sadness that the College notes the death on 25 January 2026 of Sir Mark Tully KBE, Trinity Hall alumnus and Honorary Fellow.

Sir Mark joined Trinity Hall in 1956 to study History, going on to build a successful media career. He worked with the BBC for 30 years up until July 1994, holding the position of Chief of Bureau, BBC, Delhi for 20 years. He covered all major incidents in South Asia during his tenure, including the Bhopal gas tragedy and the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
Sir Mark won a BAFTA in 1985 for lifelong achievement, and was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1985. In 1994, he was made an Honorary Fellow of Trinity Hall and he was knighted in the New Year Honours in 2002.
Master of Trinity Hall, Mary Hockaday, said: “Mark was a legendary broadcaster. I had the honour of meeting him in my BBC days and was always impressed with his capacity to tell a story straight, with journalistic honesty and a deep sense of expertise. He was full of life and blessed with a wonderful voice, which made him instantly recognisable. We send our condolences to all his family and friends.”
