Celebrating 675 years of Trinity Hall

This is a very special year for the whole Trinity Hall community as we mark our 675th anniversary.

From its origins in the aftermath of the Plague as a place to educate civil and canon lawyers, Trinity Hall continues its founding mission of education and research. It now, of course, spans the full range of arts and sciences, and welcomes students from an incredibly wide range of backgrounds who go on to make a difference in every field and every corner of the globe. This year is a chance to honour our heritage, celebrate our present and look ahead to our future ambitions.

'On the Origins of Foreign Relations Law' with Professor Campbell McLachlan

675th Anniversary of Law at Trinity Hall

At a time of turmoil in international relations, Professor McLachlan argues that we should reflect again on the international significance of the founding of Trinity Hall for the study of law. Bishop Bateman well knew the value of law in the practical world of the settlement of international disputes. It was the basis of his career. His legacy at Trinity Hall proved pivotal in the development of the ability of the British Crown to take independent legal advice on international law matters in the conduct of diplomacy and the settlement of disputes, to which generations of its members have contributed. This multi-century tradition has contributed in no small measure to what McLachlan argues is the distinctive contribution of the United Kingdom in international affairs: its insistence––sometimes at great cost to the nation––on their conduct according to law.

Limited edition lino print

The College has commissioned a new print of Trinity Hall to celebrate the College’s anniversary. A Trinity Hall Treasury

Trinity Hall’s history has been written several times. So when it came to our 675th Anniversary, we wanted to do something slightly different.

This beautiful volume of photographs and texts tells the story of the College through its Treasures, from its medieval origins as a small community to educate lawyers, to the dynamic and friendly centre of academic excellence it is today. Through individual objects and places, the book tells a very human story. Enjoy exploring Trinity Hall’s past and support its equally fascinating and important future.
