Visit to Hong Kong and Singapore
This year we travelled to Singapore and Hong Kong to host dinners for alumni and friends. We were pleased to welcome 35 alumni and guests – including 2016 freshers – to our dinners on 13 and 15 September at the Tanglin Club and Ladies Recreational Club.
Dr Andrew Murray, Admissions Tutor, visited various schools during the week explaining the process of Cambridge University admissions. The main event for the past four years has been a session open only to students from government-run non-fee-paying secondary schools, organised jointly by Trinity Hall and our local collaborators: the WYNG Foundation, the Philomathia Foundation and the HK Association of Careers Masters and Guidance Masters, with assistance from local members of the Friends of Cambridge University. That afternoon also includes the presentation to the Hong Kong Schools essay prize winners.
Hong Kong Schools Essay Prize
This is the third year that the WYNG and Philomathia Foundations have supported an essay prize for children who are studying at government-run non-fee paying secondary schools in Hong Kong; as part of the Foundation’s Media Award. There were over 140 entries. The six prize winners all came to College in July to stay for a week; they attended the Open Day and had a supervision on their essay as well as having the opportunity to have a tour of Cambridge and see some of the sites both in Cambridge and London. Other finalists had the opportunity to attend a summer schoool taught by Cambridge scholars at the Canadian International School campus in Hong Kong. Previous themes have included ‘poverty’ and ‘air’; the theme for this year was ‘waste’. Next year the theme will be ‘identity’ – see www.wma.hk.
This year’s WYNG-Philomathia essay prize winners were
- Chloe Ching Kwan Kiu
- Jamie Lai Ching Yee
- Jose Lee Hoi Yiu
- Stephanie Tse Yi Kei
- Monica Wat Tsz Yan
- Jane Wong
With thanks to the WYNG Foundation and Philomathia Foundation for their generous support of the prize and our outreach activity in Hong Kong.
