Trinity Hall and the University of Cambridge are pleased to announce that the 2022 Leslie Stephen Lecture will be given by Professor Kwame Anthony Appiah, entitled ‘This identity we so feverishly cherish’, taken from The Waves! by Virginia Woolf.
The lecture, which will be given in the Senate-House at 5.30pm on Friday 18 November, is open to all who are interested, and no tickets will be issued. There will be a drinks reception afterwards at Trinity Hall but, due to limitations of space, anyone wishing to attend this should book via the links provided in advance of the lecture.
Senior members of the University attending should please wear their gowns (black gowns without hoods).
Biography
Professor Appiah is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, Honorary Fellow of Clare College, Professor of Philosophy and of Law at New York University, and President of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Abstract
The lecture will address social identities: what they are, why they matter for ethics and politics, and how they can get out of hand.

The Leslie Stephen Lecture is free, and you do not need to book in order to attend.
Booking is required for the drinks reception, due to limited capacity. Tickets will be offered on a first come, first served basis.

Reservations
Once you have booked you will receive a booking confirmation, which you will be asked to present on arrival at the drinks reception. Please either print a copy or display using a hand-held electronic device. You will not be issued paper tickets.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you find you are no longer able to attend, as we have limited capacity for this event. Please email the office or call +44 (0)1223 332555 at the earliest opportunity, if you need to cancel a booking.

We like to take photos at our events to use in our digital and print communications. If you do not wish to have your photo taken, please let us know in advance or on the day.
Location
The lecture will take place in the Senate-House, 1 St Mary’s Passage, Cambridge CB2 3PQ.
The drinks reception will be held in the Graham Storey Room, Trinity Hall, Trinity Lane, Cambridge, CB2 1TJ. Please visit the Porters’ Lodge on arrival where they will direct you to the Graham Storey Room.
