Dr Daniel Tyler is taking up a new position as Director of Education at St Andrew’s College, within the University of Sydney.

Master Mary Hockaday, paying tribute to the Vice-Master, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for Daniel to further his academic career and for his family to move to Australia, where his wife is from.

“But it is a sad day for Trinity Hall. As Vice-Master and Acting Master, Daniel demonstrated great leadership in helping Trinity Hall navigate through the Covid-19 pandemic and respond to the  independent, external inquiry led by Gemma White KC.

“Working with other Senior Officers and Governing Body, he guided College with great care, dedication and good judgement, so that Trinity Hall has emerged from a period of great challenge, ready to look ahead and support students, Fellows and staff.”

Since his arrival in 2017 as a Fellow in English, he has directed the studies of generations of students and imparted in particular his love of the works of Charles Dickens.

During his tenure as Acting Master Dr Tyler oversaw important developments in the College, including the Royal opening of the WongAvery Music Gallery. He was also an important College representative at events: from leading the procession to Senate House when in-person graduations were reintroduced following the pandemic, to holding talks with eminent alumni and artists both online and in the College.

Dr Tyler said: “While I look forward to taking up a new role and a new opportunity, I look back on my time at Trinity Hall with great affection and gratitude. It was a privilege to be asked to act as interim Head of House for a tenure that lasted for two and a half years and to help steer the College through a difficult period until it could look with renewed confidence to exciting times ahead. I am very grateful to the Fellows and the staff for their support and I have greatly enjoyed the opportunity, as Vice-Master, to meet many alumni. I wish Fellows, staff, students, alumni, and the College, the very best for the future.”

The Master added: “I know how much he will be missed. Personally, I am immensely grateful for the support he has given me and I know how much respect he earned from other Cambridge Heads of House as Trinity Hall’s representative in the Collegiate University.

“We wish Daniel well and look forward to welcoming him back on visits from Australia in future.”

Dr Tyler will leave his post at Trinity Hall at the end of this term.
