Sir Nicholas Hytner (1974) receives honorary degree

16 June 2016

At a special Congregation in the Senate House on Wednesday, 15 June, Sir Nicholas Hytner (1974) was conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters. The honour was in recognition of his distinguished career in theatre, film and opera.

Sir Nicholas read English at Trinity Hall and went on to become a theatre, film and opera director. From 2003-15, he was Director of the National Theatre in London, directing plays by Shakespeare and Alan Bennett as well as classical and new plays. Theatrical accolades include three Olivier, five Evening Standard and three Tony awards. Sir Nicholas was knighted in 2010 and is an Honorary Fellow of Trinity Hall.

Recipients of higher doctorates conferred honoris causa are individuals of outstanding national, or usually international, achievement in their field.
