Alumnus awarded Outstanding Parliamentarian for 2006

Mani Shankar Aiyar (TH 1961) has been named Outstanding Parliamentarian for 2006 by the Indian Parliamentary Group.

Mr Aiyar read Economics at Trinity Hall, and has since pursued a career in diplomacy and politics. He follows a number of Cambridge-educated Indian politicians, notably Jawaharlal Nehru (Trinity College), and Manmohan Singh, the current Prime Minister (St John's College); Mr Aiyar currently serves as Minister of Panchayati Raj, Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and Minister of Development of North-Eastern Region, having served previously as Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas. He was first elected to the Parliament of India in 1991.

An award for Outstanding Parliamentarian was first instituted by the Indian Parliamentary Group in the year 1995. It is awarded annually to an outstanding member of the Indian Parliament. Mr Aiyar received the award from President Pratibha Devisingh Patil on 13 September 2007.
