University Challenge

16 May 2006

Trinity Hall come in as runners up after a close Final.

After a thrilling last few minutes of the University Challenge Final, Trinity Hall were narrowly beaten by 10 points by the team from Manchester University

Following a dominant first round victory over Magdalen College, Oxford, the Trinity Hall team of Chris Smyth, Ben Hardy, Robert Freedman and Iain Mathieson cruised through to the Quarter Finals, beating Birmingham University by 255 points to 95.

They came through to the second round with the highest score (320) and looked very comfortable even in the face of the usual Paxman onslaught.

In the Quarter Finals they met the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) who they beat by 225 points to 155 - another convincing victory.

The Semi Finals pitted them against Liverpool. After a slow start (Liverpool were ahead at the half way stage) they rallied to win their place in the Finals.

Another 2 minutes and the result may well have been very different, but the final score was 160 v 150, the Trinity Hall team having done the College proud.
